Measuring and Marking the Keel
Caution! Fractions ahead

Turn the boat upside down. Marking on the bottom, find the centers of the transom, mid frame and stem.

Strike the line with a chalk line or straight edge.

Measure the width of the keel and divide it in half. Make 4 marks that “half width” distance away from your newly made center line. These indicate the edge of your keel.
Take the keel and lay it on the boat. Line it up with your marks. Mark what needs to be cut off both ends of the keel.
Cut the keel accordingly. Then draw the keel’s centerline on its aft four feet. Draw another pair of lines 3/8" on either side of this centerline.

Next take the skeg and lay it on edge on the center line of the bottom. Remember to line it up with the transom. Mark its forward edge on the bottom. Kit Builders- make sure that the trailing edge of your scarph is facing aft! You don’t want the feather edge to catch on anything when you drag the boat onto the beach.

Take a nail and make nail holes through the boat on the centerline 4 inches in from each end and near the center frame. (You could also drill 3/32” holes as seen in the picture.)

Make similar holes on the centerline at the bow and stern. These will allow you to transfer the centerline to the inside of the boat.
