| Fitting the Chines at the Stem |
(In order to fit these pieces you need to do two things, use a bevel gauge and
subtract. Neither is hard.)
Using the bevel gauge, measure the angle between the surface of the side panel
and the inside face of the stem. Remember to keep the gauge normal
(90°) to the surface of the panel. |
Mark it at the end of the chine. |
Label the chine
for "inside," "outside," "up" and "down."
Next measure the angle between the edge of the panel and the face of the stem.
Mark it on the chine with the base of its angle starting at the end of the previous
angle. |
Cut the compound angle.
Bend the chine into the boat and check the fit. Trim as necessary. When the
forward half of the chine is tight to the side and in the mid frame notch, make a
mark on the chine at the center frame and an opposite mark on the side panel.
Gently remove the chine from the boat.
